The mitigation process of a residential Insurance claim can be very stressful.  The insurance companies rarely inform the homeowner of their rights or responsibilities.  The insurance adjuster may be a third-party contractor working on behalf of insurance company.  This means that the adjuster may or may not know the policy and procedures of the insurance provider.

The one the mistake is see homeowners make is requesting estimates from roofing contractors.  The insurance company will take these estimates and use them to adjust their prices accordingly.  An estimate from the homeowner is not required to mitigate the claim.
